About the Workshop:

A Devised Theatre and Ensemble Based Practices Workshop. An exploration into the creation process of an original piece of work. We will begin with a deep dive into the Viewpoints Technique created by Anne Bogart. The viewpoints will lay the foundation for the language we will need in order to explore the abstract world of devising. They also help the performer grow closer to the relationship of the impulses within the body when being in relationship to what is happening presently within the room. The latter half of the week we will introduce building compositions, layering, and sequencing when generating a new performance. We will also explore various techniques to free impulses, create dynamic stage images, and inspire playful ways of connecting with others. The workshop is open to people with a strong foundation in theatre looking for new ways to approach the work. It is also open to those with no previous experience looking to connect with others in a deeper and more meaningful way. Ever wanted to create your own performance, but didn't know where or how to begin? This workshop is for you!

About the teacher:

Robert "Bobcat" Augustine is a devised theatre maker who has spent the last few years doing some Experimental Living. After graduating from Portland State University and going through the year long training at the Institute of Contemporary Performance by Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble, where he devised two full length productions. There he went through extensive training in devised performance creation, The Viewpoints, Suzuki Method, and Clown. His work explores removing the boundary between performance and reality. Following his time there he went on to live in a camper and travel the United States sharing clown and theatre in untraditional spaces. He worked for a camp in Nevada City, CA where he built story experiences for the kids that attended. Theatre in the woods? Lots and lots of generators! Soon after found himself living and working with a group of students at Phare Ponleu Selpak, a circus school in Battambang Provence of Cambodia. There he translated the Viewpoints into Khmer, the native language of Cambodia, and worked with a group of ten theatre students in Ensemble Based Practices and Devised theatre. He has also trained with South Coast Repertory Theatre, as well as, Del'Arte International. Now I am looking to plug into Los Angeles and get an ensemble going to make a new show!
